SAGE

Community & Support Groups and LGBTQ+ Elders & Aging

SAGE is the country’s largest and most established organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older adults. Founded in 1978, SAGE works to ensure that LGBTQ+ elders can age with dignity, connection, and access to affirming care — whether they are living independently, navigating healthcare systems, or seeking community.

SAGE offers a national network of local affiliates that provide direct services including social programming, case management, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ seniors across the United States. Their SAGEConnect program pairs isolated LGBTQ+ elders with trained volunteers for regular phone or video companionship, directly addressing one of the most significant health risks older LGBTQ+ people face. The SAGECare training program helps healthcare providers, senior living facilities, and home care workers deliver culturally competent care to LGBTQ+ older adults.

For LGBTQ+ people navigating retirement, housing, healthcare decision-making, or the grief of losing partners and chosen family, SAGE offers both practical support and community. Their work recognizes that many LGBTQ+ elders came of age during criminalization, the AIDS crisis, and decades of social exclusion — and that healing and belonging remain possible at any age.

If you are an LGBTQ+ older adult seeking connection, support, or advocacy, or a family member or caregiver looking for guidance, SAGE is the most comprehensive national resource for this community.
